To the Early Risers

“It’s Wednesday at 5am! Doesn’t it feel good to be alive,” I shout into the bitter slumbering air of our apartment, “who’s ready to face the day?”

I sip some more coffee, examine the ear plugs embedded in my wife’s skull, the squirt bottle of water next to my son’s bed, and the animal grunt from my daughter when I sing Time to rise and shine.

The early riser knows best when to write instead.

  1. I’m laughing. Only an early riser knows this feeling – even the dogs know when mama’s writing, but then there are days when all the kids come home that I burst into song –

the donkey song. To wake them! What a fun slice!

  2. I love the detail of your wife’s earplugs.. she’s learned to live with an early riser! I love waking up before my household but often I’m so stressed I’ll wake someone up as I just need a few moments of quiet before the chaos.

  3. I’m a proud early-riser, Thomas. I have learned some discipline over the years. Now I can actually pull some writing together in the afternoon, but it’s not my best time of day. I thrive on a.m. quiet, actually can get pretty testy if someone joins me before I’ve had enough of it.
